September 24 - Paid In Cocaine

Ian RennieSep 26, 2026

It took a while for me to get this song. It got in its own way a little, and it wasn't until I was reading the lyrics in the book that this ballad to the people who were adjacent to fame really clicked. "Oh", I thought. "This song is about me".

The band I was in ultimately were unlikely to make it. We were good enough to get a foot in the door, though, and in the right place and the right time to make it far enough to at least fail on a good stage. Clint Boon from the Inspiral Carpets came to watch us once. Mark Potter from Elbow produced our demo tape. I liked and still like some of our songs.

But I was never really the vocalist we needed, and everyone else had other stuff in their lives. Two of them are still in the music industry in some respect (one as a sound guy for other bands, one is very active in modular synth. The others... I've lost track. Partly because everyone's on Facebook and I'm not on Facebook, partly because the way my time in the band ended was bitter.

But Clint Boon came to watch us. And one of Elbow produced our demo tape.

And from the wilder end of youtube, here's a song that I can best describe as being performed by a minor character from The Wicked And The Divine
