September 16 - For The Portuguese Goth Metal Bands

Ian RennieSep 22, 2026

John is often at his best when he's making music about music, or about the people who make music and the culture they come from. This song is a hymn to and a celebration of those who make art that they know the world isn't going to be into because they themselves are into it. The market for goth metal in Portugal isn't huge, any more than the market for alt punk in Korea is, and yet you get dedicated bands in both of those scenes just working and slogging and creating their guts out, because you don't need the world to care, you just need to be allowed to make your fucking thing.

And that's magical. That's where musical beauty come from. And if you're venal and mercenary you should pay attention because that's where the next huge stuff comes from.

I've been listening to a lot of stuff lately that youtube is confused enough to think I'll like, because my tastes have become harder to predict. There are some misses in there, but a surprising number of hits, especially with bands who are just doing their own thing as hard as they can. Haven't reached Portuguese goth metal yet, but Balming Tiger put out an alt-pop song today that's really doing something right. I think for the next little while I'm going to pair these song a day reviews with "here's something weird and actually brilliant I heard today". So today it's "원진 (Wonjin) - 캔디가 생각나 (Candy)"
