March 25 - The Last Limit of Bhakti

For someone who writes a lot about religion, John has to this point written surprisingly few straight devotionals, but that's very clearly what this is, and it's to its benefit. This is the song of a man of faith trying to express his faith, aimed not at you the listener but at a greater listener.

Back when I was a lot more involved in drama, I was part of a production of Murder In The Cathedral. Two productions actually but this story comes from the first one. The director, who was also playing Thomas Becket, and who later became a Carmelite lay member, talked to me at length at one point about the fact that as an actor playing a priest I had three audiences. I was speaking to the other characters on stage with me. I was speaking to the audience. And I was speaking to God. And this has stuck with me in terms of who I am trying to reach with my words and intensions.
