January 20 - Quetzacoatl Comes Through

So the first thing to observe about this song is that the thing uploaded to Youtube under its name isn't this song but rather a superbly 80s weird little synth keyboards things. It's quite nice in its own way and very much fits into the idea of This Year being an odd journey to unexpected places.

But anyway, the song itself. It's guitar led in a way that's plotting an interesting riff pattern, with a gentle but sad and reverent vocal about the sight of a plumed serpent god, at once mundane and sacred. As with many Mountain Goats songs of this period it's a small sketch rather than a huge canvas, and part of what it captures is the different ways to view divinity, and the different ways of looking at love that's ending. The fact that the world is big does not mean our concerns are small. The fact that sometimes a song is a guitar contemplation on dead gods does not stop it sometimes being strange synth nonsense
