January 2 - Running Away With What Freud Said

By@Ian RennieJan 9, 2026

Wow, this is early. A song from the first Mountain Goats cassette. In fact, the first song from that first cassette. It couldn't be more simple in terms of the looping rhythm, and at one minute thirty four it's very much more an immediate thought than a fleshed out idea, but that's where its beauty lies.

I'm not going to say what this song is about. Only one person can do that and he wrote a whole book about that so you should read that instead, but I can say what I got from this song. It's about being alive, about a dirty world that still sustains you. About being cold and awake and trying to make sense of things.

January is always a time to ask what the fucking point is. It's cold and wretched and the festivities are over and you have an entire fucking year of this to come. It's a time of examination. Sometimes examination leaves you with a huge dirty gap with nothing in it. Sometimes examination lets you spot small bright things you hadn't seen.

Every day is going to get brighter this month.
