The roll of this song is intense as it searches thought yearning and explores different concepts. This is an era of Mountain Goats songs that all feel like they take place at night in open places, and there's a certain mentality that the open creates in those places.

During the day, the sky is the sky, a big canopy above you, a dome. You can see as high as the clouds or maybe as high as the arc of blue all the way up. But at night, especially on a cloudless night, especially if there isn't much light pollution, the sky is a hole. There is nothing between you and nothing. You are pinned by gravity to a rock, and if you look up you can see a chunk of rock reflecting sunlight a third of a million kilometres away, and that is the closest thing you can see. The points of light around it are either planets millions of miles off or stars so far away we had to invent new ways of talking about how far they were. And those are the closest things there are. It's no wonder that looking up drives people mad.

Other than the mention of the moon, this song keeps its gaze down, seeing the other people pinned against the rock, looking for the one who makes the process of being pinned less terrifying.
