February 15 - Hatha Hill

By@Ian RennieFeb 15, 2026

Exceptionally simple riff at the core of this one, but the sound is irresistible. Heavy on the bass and moving at a soft and drowzy pace with beautifully droning violins in the mix. There are basically two chords in this with a soft vocal over the top and it is a seductively enjoyable piece of music.

This feels both personal and private and benefits from both. A capture not just of a moment in the life of a character but a moment in the life of a songwriter. I don't know who had sugar on their mouth, I never will. But John did and does and that's what's important.

This was a song from a single collaboration between The Mountain Goats and a violinist called Alastair Galbraith, who we will hear more of later.
