April 15 - Straight Six

The blurred space between song and poem and fiction sketch is the place where the Mountain Goats live best, and this song is a wonderful example of this, acting as a crack we can look through to see the two occupants of this car in the dark as it rides through the dark of the city.

This is our first sight of Jenny, who will become a recurring character to the point of getting her own album, but here she has more name than she does character, and more name than our unnamed narrator. This is a poverty story, and a love story, and a night story. We don't know where Jenny and her companion are going, but we suspect it's nowhere good. They're driven by magic and crime and love and an engine that basically works.

I would wonder where they're going, but I suspect we're going to see.
