September 7 - Heel Turn 2

Ian RennieSep 8, 2026

And here's the other half of yesterday. This is the turn to evil told in weakness and regret, and is an instructive lesson in evil, encapsulated by the line

"You found my breaking point... congratulations!"

A line with a shaking laugh in it. This isn't the breaking point of Choked Out, with the power that it unleashes. This is where someone collapses, not where they break free.

This is, in other words, a lament. And as a lament it's suitable that halfway through it drifts away from its own misery and into something stranger and more experimental. In many ways this song leaves itself behind. It goes to another place, a place where guilt cannot touch it. The ending is the closest that I've heard Mountain Goats sound to Division Bell era Pink Floyd, which isn't a comparison I thought I'd see myself make.
