September 3 - Foreign Object
Sometime songs revel in silliness to hide or ease something bleak. Mountain Goats are masters of the upbeat song with downbeat lyrics. Sometimes, as in yesterday's song, they're there to show that in times of darkness there is still light. The world might be bleak, but here is justice and triumph and fun.
And sometimes the song is just a fucking laugh in itself. Everything about this song is just enjoyable violent silliness, delighting in the idea of the undefined and thus infinitely dangerous bit of... something.... that the heel uses on their opponent. My favourite thing about these is that a good heel especially a good territories heel always has a favourite. Cowboy Bob Orton had his arm cast. William Regal had his brass knuckles. MJF has his diamond ring. Don Callis has his screwdriver. But the best ones are more esoteric than just "this is a weapon I will hurt you with". They're loaded boots, or camera flashes, or other things that generally do Something Bad to the good guy.
But then again, sometimes you just need to stab someone in the eye.
