September 27 - Get High And Listen To The Cure
You can tell we're approaching the end of the month as we have the themed rarities. This one is a weird vinyl-only disco demo that's about exactly what it says in the title.
Imagine being so prolific as a songwriter and performer that 365 songs isn't enough to recount everything you've done. That you have too many songs to fit on all your albums and regular releases. I actually love these sort of rarities and demos in part for their own quality but in part for the fact that finding them is a challenge. Things are buried or hidden or otherwise out of the public eye.
The generally quite good but not particularly remarkable 90s indie band Strangelove put out a single for the sing Sway (it's a perfectly respectable bit of emotional semi-pop) which was fine on its own terms but included several live acoustic songs. These included a version of Moon River that has made me cry a dozen times over the years. It's on the single and I think of a rarities album, but otherwise is just a weird little thing they did, and the most beautiful thing they did.
Get High And Listen To The Cure isn't at that level, but it's a perfectly cromulent attempt to describe, in simple and plan terms, why a band are your north star.
