October 9th - Possum By Night
I miss possums. And by extension miss a number of things about the edges of urban life shading into rural life in North Carolina.
At some point I'm going to have to think long and hard about what my 8 years living in the United States actually meant overall. It began as "young and in love and will be wherever she is" and slowly became an abstract love for the place along with the love for her. And one of the thing I loved about it was the weirdnesses of wildlife and nature that you don't get in England. You don't get kudzu, you don't get ice storms, you don't get most of the poisonous spiders and most of the poisonous snakes, and you don't get possums. Foxes are the closest we get and fundamentally not the same.
While writing this it occurred to me that there's a very real chance that even when I go back to the US there's every chance I will never go back to North Carolina. The family we go back there fore either aren't there any more or will travel to where the rest of the family is. The friends have dispersed. All that's left is places that have changed.
Might as well just say I miss the past. And 50% of art got there before I did.
