October 2 - No I can't
Wow, we're a long way from this. There is such difference between the odd experiments of these early EPs and the significantly more ambitious exploration of later albums. Which isn't to say that one is better or worse than the other. Sometimes the simple execution of an idea makes it more possible to actually crack the idea open and see how it works and what it means.
There are two versions of this, one of which is just John with a guitar, and then an alternate version that includes bass and backup vocals and is played at a much more frenetic pace. I couldn't tell you why the second one is better, but there's something about it that works much more. It might be that the first version feels selfish, like it's the story of someone getting everything that they want, while the second feels like someone who is a prisoner somewhere and only has the things that are brought to them, and has to give thanks properly or they won't get anything more. It adds something important to the song. And makes me wonder what a modern version would be. Listen to both, record a new version yourself on a Panasonic DX4500.
