March 6 - Black Molly
It might be the very "live at a dive bar" recording, but there is something delightfully and atmospherically nineties about this song. It might also be that half of the chord sequence is Stars by Hum which is one of my favourite songs from the nineties. But the overall effect was that this song, which I came to new on this playthrough, filled me with nostalgia.
This is a song about love and precarity, about the dangers of longing and despair and how they make moments of romantic desperation feel more violent with their potential consequences. I can see the ruined apartment that surrounds the unspooling singer of this song, just as I can feel a sorry fall off him, a kind of sorrow that can only come from joy going sour.
