April 10 - Shadow Song

ByIan RennieApr 10, 2026

This is clearly a season of partings, of people going ahead, leaving, whether they mean to or not. When you go (voluntarily or involuntarily) you take parts of people with you. Those parts don't always last, and it's not actually a bad thing necessarily that they don't.

But sometimes when you go you go in hope that people will follow. And sometimes when they bid you to save them a place they do so knowing they may not And what matters is not whether the covenant is fulfilled but that it meant enough to try. When you go, I am telling you that you matter enough that I would follow. When I go, I am telling you that you matter enough that I would welcome you again.

I'm bad at goodbyes, I'm bad at keeping up with people. There are people in my life who I loved dearly and would love dearly again who aren't part of it any more because I fell out of the habit of them and they fell out of the habit of me, and after a while the day to day cost of getting back in touch grows.

But I'll save them a seat.
